Usable content is dedicated to producing more accessible user friendly webcontent, by various techniques
After two consultants met to re-develop a government website, looking around discovered that many websites (particularly public) could be helped using the same product. Of course through evaluation we learnt that no two websites are the same, so each version can be easily customised.
Now heading up a growing team of developers, business analysts, project managers, they remain...
"...I have been involved in the development of a range of websites and computer-based systems for many companies and organisations operating in both the public and private sectors. This experience has given me a good insight into how both business operates and what the users need. Quite often these are two completely different things, and this is the challenge that I enjoy - how to give the users a system that basically just works, but which will also be really beneficial to the business. Oh - I did an MBA as well, but I try not to talk too much business gibberish.
I am a really big fan of new technology, without being a true geek/nerd.... but only if the technology is making things a lot easier for the people that are expected to use it. What's the point of having a flashy new miniature laptop that is a complete nightmare to download email on, has a difficult user interface that makes it a chore to use the thing, and frequently makes you want to throw it out of the window...?
My design philosophy is that if you can develop a system that people can use straight away, with little or no training, then you've done a good job. Of course training is a valuable tool so that users can get to fully understand the full power of a system, which should make their jobs even easier, but you know what I mean.
In fact there it is - technology should help people, not make them angry and frustrated. That's the idea of our products, I think. Making technology do the hard part so you can use your creative energies in a positive way."
"...English, with a degree in Marketing and Communications went on to become a reasonable web designer, before becoming expert in accessibility during the development of a government office website, went on to assist several companies websites with online marketing (including PPC). Other famous clients include Virgin Mobile (intranet development) and more recently produced an intranet for a Top 100 ‘Hitwise’ financial company.
I love skiing and scuba diving, tried to stay fit but I am not really managing it ... passion for cars, only ever seem to buy 90's classics that are falling apart however... "
Together, they want to be pragmatic about developing usable systems – that fulfil the business requirements – enabling people to get on with their job, unaffected by the technology behind it.
There is a lot of theory around but applying it (successfully) is something that the UsableContent team have been doing for ten years.
We now also have a number of consultants based in several different countries, meeting the specific needs of our international clients.
