Write the most important bit first
- on a page
- in a paragraph
- in a sentence
Inverted pyramid writing is known by several names, but is considered to be one of the most important aspects of web writing, for the simple reason that people do not want to read a lot on the web, so they will stop soon.
By writing the conclusion, and main points first, people who stop reading early will get your point.The further down the page, the less people will have read that far.
In print people are prepared to read more (less glare and higher resolution) so on a screen they want to know the point of why they are reading something immediately after scan reading the title and the first paragraph, if they don't think its right most users will click out (usually using the back button) to try and find a more appropriate page.
Newspapers are written in this format - with the size of most papers today, its almost impossible to read one word for word (especially on the way to work) as such the style is written so you can go as in depth as you want.
